IT’S TIME FOR A NEW CHAMPION AT WIMBLEDON

IT’S TIME FOR A NEW CHAMPION AT WIMBLEDON

Why Djokovic deserves to win the Wimbledon Championships.

For the past eight years, from 2003, there have been only two Champions in the Gentlemen’s Doubles at The Wimbledon Championships, Roger Federer with 6 wins, Rafael Nadal with two. Federer has played seven finals while Nadal has played four, his fifth final being the one tomorrow. The 2 Rs – Roger and Rafael have thoroughly dominated the oldest tennis tournament in the world and that is why I say that it is time for a new Champion at Wimbledon! With the 2011 Gentlemen’s Singles Finals being only one day away with both finalists already decided, there is little doubt as to whom that new Champion should be.

Novak Djokovic who reached his first ever finals at the All England Club by defeating Jo-Wilfred Tsonga in four sets with a score line reading 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-7 (9), 6-3 , has set his sights on the prestigious Wimbledon trophy by sky-rocketing to the top of the ATP Rankings. Djokovic has won only two Grand Slams so far, both at the Australian Open, and is raring to go for a third possible victory. His reaction after defeating Tsonga was enough to show how much reaching the final means to him, he has already lost twice in the semifinals year. He screamed, pumped his fists in the air, he was elated! "It's hard to express your emotions in a very short time but hopefully some more celebrations are about to come," he later said. Djokovic had earlier said that reaching the finals of Wimbledon has been his dream since the age of four.

Djokovic has been playing the best tennis of his career, by his own admission, this year with an enviable win-loss record of 47-1. He has been beaten only once this whole year, at the French Open semis by Roger
Federer, and he has looked increasingly comfortable on the grass surface at SW19. This is the first time that he is in with more than a chance to win here and he can surely go all the way if he continues form where he left against Tsonga. What remains to be seen is can he be the man who overcomes Nadal’s dominance at Grand Slam Finals. I personally believe that Djokovic can win his first title in Europe with the kind of form he has been in. it will be a welcome change to have a new name inscribed at the Honors Board at the All England Club.

Good luck for tomorrow Novak Djokovic!
